The Cathedral and the Giralda of Seville
The Seville's Cathedral is one of the most important
spanish monuments. It's the bigger gothic temple in Spain
and the third in the Catholic World,
after Saint Peter in Rome and Saint Paul in London. It
was declared National Monument in 1928 and UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 1987.
The Cathedral was built over the ancient XII century
Almohade Mosque.
It is worth mentioning the main
entries facades of the building. The oldest one is the
'Puerta del Perdón',
located at north, which was the main access to the ancient
Mosque (It keeps up cedar wood doorframes, bronze covered,
in which there's wrote: 'The power belongs to Allah'
and 'The eternity belongs to Allah' in cuffic alphabet).
The door's front was refurbished in 1520, and was decorated
with some sculptures made by Miguel Florentín.
He sculpted Saint Peter and Saint Paul images located
in both the sides,Virgin Mary and Gabriel Arcangel over
the previous, and, finally, the big bas-relief about
Merchants Expulsion, located over the door's arch.
The most relevant element of the Cathedral is 'La Giralda'.
It was in origin the ancient Mosque's minaret,
which was built by the emir Al-Mumin Abu Yacub in 1184.
The spanish architect Hernán
Ruiz managed the tower refurbishment from 1558 to 1568.
At this moment, they added the body of bells and the
famous weathervane "giralda",
from which the tower name becomes. |
